OC Remix Comes through Again

I came across a Ragnarok Online (RO) Sound Track remix at the OC Remix website. The OC Remix is a place where musicians and DJ’s who have remixed video game sound tracks can host and link their work. Both the Chrono Symphonic and FF7 Lifestream were phenomenally remixed scores. In the RO Hybridism remix, my favorite songs were as follows:
Samurai Discotheque; Out of Curiosity; Brassy Road; Ancient Groover; Jumping Dragon; Nano East

Hearing the remixed scores really brought a lot of fond memories back about the original game. I am surprised that the DJ/musician decided to remix with a jazz-esque influence. I would have gone more with some kind of techno remix. Regardless, much of the songs are great; but at times when listening to them I feel like I am in a new age wine bar or furniture store or something.

Gravity has since released a korean open beta of their next installment of the game: Ragnorak Online 2. Unfortunately you need a Korean SSN to get into the beta. Rumors float about that an English beta is due out sometime later this year.

Wizards of the Coast hosted the third Penny Arcade/PVP Dungeons and Dragons Pod Cast (along with associated comic). If you have not already listened to the other two ([1], [2]) I strongly recommend listening to those and getting in on the third. They are really hilarious and give a great insight to fourth edition mechanics as well as D&D altogether. Listening to it definitely has my interest piqued – me being a complete n00b and never having played D&D.

At the moment I am downloading the Donkey Kong In Concert remix. I will give my impressions on it later.

My sister Nichole passed me a link unto this TV website. I am amazed they haven’t gotten shut down as what they are hosting seems quite illegal (recordings of tons of old and new TV shows along with movies not even released on DVD yet). Maybe the fact that the site only streams the content as opposed to letting you download it is how they get away with it.

Thanks for the kinds words and plug for OC ReMix, Nick, we appreciate it. Just clarifying, though OC ReMixers do remixes/arrangements of video game music, most aren’t DJs in the traditional sense. “Musician” is definitely a great catch-all term.

I definitely agree with you that Joshua Morse’s “Ragnarok Online : Hybridism” is a really solid album. Though you’re a fan of techno more, it was good to see you down with the jazz stylings of Morse along with his collaborators Anthony Lofton and posu yan!

“Brassy Road” and “”Samurai Discotheque” will both end up on OC ReMix down the line as well, and perhaps maybe other tracks from “Hybridism”, so we hope having those on OCR introduces more fans like yourself to Josh’s album. Go out of your way to check out Josh’s other OC ReMixes and the music from his website, JMFlava (http://web.jmflava.com/); I think you’ll really enjoy what you hear!

Interesting bio, Nick. Seems like you’re working on a kind of Audiosurf for the mind! Looking forward to your thoughts on “Kong in Concert” in the future. All the best to you!

I’m more than happy to plug OC ReMix as often as I can. That place has developed a niche on the internet unparalleled to anything else I’ve ever seen. They host good work over there.

I have to ask you, how did you come by this blog? Did wordpress automatically send you something as I linked OC Remix? The reason I ask is I have never posted anything on OC Remix and can’t have more than 50 or so active readers. It is interesting that you have found your way here. Regardless, thank you for commenting! :D

I will have to check out the JMFlava.

Isn’t that TV site crazy? I don’t have a TiVO and I can’t really commit my undivided attention to TV shows for weeks on end when they air at inconvenient times. Maybe that site will motivate me to watch some of the TV shows I used to follow.

Nick, “I see all.” Which is Swahili for Technorati!

As for OCR, we definitely work hard to develop our niche with video game music, and it’s been paying off not just with the quality of the free music we host, but with us providing the remixed soundtrack to the upcoming Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix from Capcom on XBLA and PSN, so we’re getting some pro work. So I can speak for everyone when I say we’re really glad you appreciate our music and what we’re doing with it!

It seems like you’ve already checked a lot of things out from OCR, but just in case you haven’t DLed out free torrents (http://www.ocremix.org/torrents/) to grab all the mixes and albums, definitely give it a shot. I say that because there are so many great tracks from games you might not have played, you’d definitely find more gems like Joshua Morse’s material. I wouldn’t be here today working with OCR if I hadn’t have taken the plunge! – Larry
